Huawei hosts first ICPC Challenge Championship powered by Huawei

Oct 11, 2023

(Shenzhen, China – 11 October 2023) Talented young programmers from 25 countries gathered recently in one of China’s major technology hubs to compete in International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), a competition for university students around the world.

Sometimes referred to as “the Olympics of competitive programming,” the ICPC operates under the auspices of the ICPC Foundation, a non-profit organization created to “advance the art and science of competitive programming.”

Huawei recently hosted the first ICPC Challenge Championship, a training camp style coding challenge specifically designed for champions from previous challenges.

The competition gives contestants a problem that’s tied to an important societal need, such as the need to protect food crops without harming the environment. In one scenario, contestants were given satellite data showing agricultural land.

“We explained to them that these were pictures of an area that had lots of crops, and certain colors indicated that there was a disease,” said ICPC Executive Director William Poucher. “Their job was to calculate how you could treat the perimeter of the affected area so as to prevent the disease from spreading, while minimizing the use of chemical pesticides, in the shortest possible time.”

In a new Transform Talks videos interview, Poucher spoke with Huawei about the current challenges that existing with the global ICT ecosystem, and how the ICPC plans to create more opportunities for young programmers in the coming years.
